Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress presidential primaries this weekend, indications have emerged that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the APC; Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State; and Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, may spearhead regional parties.
Meanwhile, according to sources, Peter Obi has been in talks with the NNPP but has not yet joined the party.
“It is not official, but that rumour is going on,” a source close to Kwankwaso said in response to speculation that Obi had joined the NNPP after leaving the PDP. I’m not sure if he (Obi) has contacted us. You are aware that he resigned today (Wednesday). But I know they’ve been talking about it with Kwankwaso for a long time.
“What could happen is that 2023 politics shift to regional politics.” In the north, the NNPP is already powerful. There is a chance that Ike Ekweremadu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Peter Obi will form an alliance with another South East party.
“If Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is denied the APC ticket, he may return to the South-West with the Social Democratic Party.” As a result, these three parties may become the major regional parties in 2023.”
