According to the Federal Government, 39 industries were shut down last week in seven states for failing to comply with various environmental laws.
In addition, it declared that investigations into the actions of Chinese miners in Osun State had started in response to concerns about environmental damage, agriculture devastation, and water source contamination.
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, which the government used to make the announcement and add that all of the offenders would be brought to justice. Following several warnings being disregarded, the recently sealed companies were shut down.
At a news conference in Abuja, NESREA’s Director-General, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, told the media that the agency was taking this action to safeguard the environment in accordance with its mandate and that no environmental offenders would be spared.
“Just last week, the agency embarked on an enforcement drive which led to the sealing of 39 facilities in different parts of the country for failing to comply with extant environmental laws,” he stated.
Jauro added, “The facilities had been given notices of compliance concerns in line with legal provisions but failed to abate their infractions against the environment.
“These facilities will be penalised for their offences and some will be prosecuted in courts of competent jurisdiction. The enforcement is an ongoing exercise and I assure Nigerians that no erring facility will be spared”.
The NESREA director added that among other industries, the sealed businesses included those in the poultry, power, pharmaceuticals, detergents, and beverage manufacturing industries.
