The new fixed International Termination Rate of $0.10 for voice services, imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission, is the new fee foreign telecom providers will pay when terminating international calls on local Nigerian networks.
The ITR, which relates to the price of sending call traffic into Nigeria, was raised from the $0.045 floor price that was initially announced in December of last year.
The new fee, which would go into effect on September 1, 2022, was described by the Commission as being the set charge for ITR services.
Additionally, it stated that local operations have to be paid in dollars by overseas operators.
This is in accordance with a document on the Determination of Mobile (Voice) International Termination Rate (As Amended) as of August 25, 2022.
As for why the floor price was changed to a set price, the NCC stated, “While the Determination had set a floor price at $0.045 and gives the MNOs room to negotiate on commercial terms with carriers, there were related indications that MNOs took advantage of this latitude to engage in discriminatory pricing that favours their related international carrier partners to the detriment of the Nigerian transit/IDA operators”.
