On September 24, the Mike Adebiyi family and the DOA Foundation hosted a small-scale soccer competition to support Daniel Oreoluwa Adebiyi’s desire to play professional soccer.
Three schools participated in the competition: Chrisland School in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Chrisland School in Opebi, and Chrisland School in Idimu in the Park, Lagos.
Chrisland College, Idimu defeated Chrisland School, Ikeja 2-1 in the first game, but Chrisland High School, VGC fell to Chrisland School, Ikeja 1-0 in the second.
The third game was a scoreless draw between Chrisland School, Idimu and Chrisland School, VGC.
Chrisland School, Idimu, which got four points from two games, won the championship ahead of Chrisland School, Ikeja and Chrisland School, VGC, which had three and one points, respectively.
Ashiru Olaseewo, the head of sports at Chrisland School in VGC and a member of the organizing committee, made the following remarks following the event: “The tournament is in memory of one of our students Daniel Oreoluwa Adebiyi, a very talented footballer whose dream was to play in one of the football academies in England, but death cut his dream short because he had an injury and died.
“While on the sick bed, the parents asked him what he wanted to be remembered for, and he requested that they set up a foundation for him, where this competition would be played and the MVP sponsored outside the country to a club in the UK or USA.
“The essence of this tournament is also to discover fresh talents for the national teams and to combine academics with sports.”
He continued by saying that the organizers were preparing to sign up more schools to take part in the following edition.
“The MVP today (Saturday) won a one-year kit sponsorship and a cash prize of N200,000. We had challenges holding the event this year, which is why we had only three of our schools.
“We had two teams from Chrisland School, VGC play in the first edition in 2021, now it’s larger because we had three schools.
“We are hoping that by 2023, we will have more schools register for the competition and the cash prize for the MVP will be around N500,000 to N1m with a scholarship to an academy in the US or UK.”
