Nigerian Girls Missing from FIBA Top 100 Rankings

Following the FIBA 2022 Youths Events, the current rankings from basketball’s governing body, FIBA, show that Nigerian girls are not among the top 100 teams in the world.

The new FIBA World Ranking Youth methodology, which was introduced earlier this year, determines each team’s rating points for every game as well as its ranking based on the weighted average rating points of all its games.

The announcement on the FIBA website states that the nations not mentioned have 0 points and are consequently all ranked after the final nation mentioned.

While there are no Nigerian girls in the top 100 rankings, Mali, the winners of the most recent FIBA U-16 Women’s African Championship, ranked 19th, and Egypt ranked 20th.

The following African nation to make the cut is Angola, which is ranked 36th. Uganda, Algeria, and Mozambique are ranked 40th, 41st, and 42nd, respectively.

Other African nations that made the top 100 include Madagascar, Tanzania, Senegal, Rwanda, Guinea, Gabon, and New Guinea.

Australia now leads with 697.4 points, only one more than Spain.

Hungary is in sixth place (681.2) after Canada (674). With five victories in seven games, they did exceptionally well at the U17 Women’s World Cup. At the 2022 U16 Women’s European Championship, they also won seven out of seven games.

With their victory at the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship 2022, Lithuania rises to rank 7 (653.3).

Slovenia, which is currently at the 9th position, rose 36 spots to make it into the top 10. Slovenia’s improvement may be attributed to the nation’s five victories in its seven games in the U-17 Women’s World Cup, including victories over Australia and Japan, two groups who were ranked in the top 10 before the competition.
