With the conclusion of the group stage matches of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Banyana Banyana of South Africa, and the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco gave Africa a historic three-placement in the next stage of the tournament.
It is the first time in history that three African countries have advanced to the last 16 of a FIFA World Cup competition at the same time.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Super Falcons advanced to the knockout stage after a tense goalless tie with the Republic of Ireland. Prior to that, Nigeria overcame co-hosts Australia 3-2 in a dramatic match following a goalless draw with the heavily favoured Olympic champions, Canada, to advance for the round of 16, ranking second in Group B and going undefeated.
Morocco rebounded from a 6-0 loss to Germany on July 24 with a 1-0 victory over South Korea on Sunday. The Atlas Lionesses defeated Colombia 1-0 on Thursday, placing second in Group H.
South African champions Banyana Banyana opened their campaign with a 2-1 setback to their opponent Sweden, but rallied back to draw Argentina 2-2. On Wednesday, the tenacious team prevailed 3-2 over Italy. South Africa took second place in Group G.
Following England’s 6-1 victory over China on Tuesday, it was revealed that Nigeria would face the Lionesses in the round of 16 on Monday in what promises to be an entertaining match.
The following are the schedules for the teams who will compete in the final 16:
Switzerland vs Spain (Saturday, August 5)
Netherlands vs South Africa (Sunday, August 6)
