The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has tapped into the prowess of 24-year-old OGC Nice striker, Terem Moffi, to fill the void left by the injured Victor Boniface in the Super Eagles squad for the impending Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Despite an initial exclusion from the squad announced last month, Moffi’s fortunes have taken a swift turn following the unfortunate injury to Victor Boniface, who suffered a groin injury during the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi. Boniface, Bayer Leverkusen’s standout performer, is the top scorer in the German Bundesliga with an impressive tally of 10 goals in 16 league games this season.
Moffi, who has showcased his goal-scoring prowess in the French Ligue 1, notably netting six goals this season for OGC Nice, was initially left out of the AFCON squad despite featuring in the team’s two previous outings in November. However, the injury setback for Boniface has propelled Moffi into the spotlight, offering him a chance to make a significant impact on the continental stage.
This unfortunate injury to Boniface follows closely on the heels of midfielder Wilfred Ndidi’s withdrawal from the squad. Ndidi sustained an injury during Leicester City’s 2-0 win at Cardiff City on December 29th, further thinning Nigeria’s ranks as they prepare for the AFCON tournament.
With these setbacks, the Super Eagles, face challenges in their quest for AFCON glory. Nigeria is scheduled to kick off its campaign in Group A on Sunday in Abidjan against Equatorial Guinea. The unexpected reshuffling of the squad has added an element of uncertainty, but Moffi’s inclusion injects fresh talent and goal-scoring potential into the Super Eagles lineup.
