Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, secured their inaugural victory in Group A at the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying event in Antwerp, Belgium, by defeating Senegal 72-65.
Despite initially leading in the first quarter with a score of 20-18, the Afrobasket champions found themselves behind in the second quarter, trailing Senegal 37-46.
They began the final quarter with an impressive 11-0 run, swiftly shifting the momentum back in their favour. Amy Okonkwo emerged as the standout performer for Nigeria, tallying an impressive 21 points and 10 rebounds, showcasing the skills that earned her the MVP title at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in 2023.
The D’Tigress experienced a thrilling roller-coaster ride throughout the game but ultimately clinched a well-deserved victory. Their next challenges await them, as they will face the United States on Friday and Belgium on Sunday.
With this stellar performance, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team has soared to the top, echoing the success of their male football counterparts, who recently triumphed over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana to secure a spot in the AFCON 2023 finals.
