Nigeria’s para powerlifting team has showcased exceptional strength and skill at the ongoing Para Powerlifting World Cup in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, as reported by The Punch.
The team secured four gold medals, with two triumphs each on Wednesday and Thursday, highlighting their dominance on the global stage.
Bose Bejide set the tone for Nigeria’s success by clinching the first gold medal in the women’s -50kg category on the opening day of the competition, demonstrating remarkable talent and determination.
Esther Nworgu further bolstered Nigeria’s medal count by securing gold in the women’s -41kg category, marking an upgrade from her silver medal performance at the Dubai 2023 World Cup.
In the men’s events on Thursday, Thomas Kure seized the spotlight by claiming gold in the -65kg weight class, while Roland Ezuruike displayed exceptional strength and technique to secure another gold medal for Nigeria in the -54kg category.
Captain of the team expressed pride in the lifters’ achievements, emphasizing the hard work and dedication that led to their success. She noted that the team is not resting on its laurels and aims to secure more medals as the tournament progresses.
Reigning world champions Onyinyechi Mark (women’s -61kg) and Kafila Almaruf (women’s -73kg) are expected to contribute to Nigeria’s gold medal tally before the conclusion of the six-day tournament. Other medal hopefuls include Paralympic medallists Oluwafemiayo (women’s -86kg), Bose Omolayo (women’s -79kg), and Loveline Obiji (women’s -86kg), further highlighting Nigeria’s strong presence in para powerlifting.
