The Senate has confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). This confirmation took place on Wednesday, September 25, after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted a formal request to the Senate.

Justice Kekere-Ekun had been serving in an acting capacity since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. She arrived at the Senate Chamber at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, accompanied by other justices from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

In his request to the Senate, President Tinubu stated, “I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun CON for confirmation as CJN,” in accordance with section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution. The letter was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session on Tuesday, September 24.

After a thorough screening process, the Senate officially confirmed Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment. During the interview, she stressed her commitment to using technology for faster justice delivery in Nigeria and vowed that “there would be no refuge for corrupt individuals and criminals.” She also pledged to maintain the judiciary’s independence from external influences.
