Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich delivered a historic performance in the Chicago Marathon, obliterating the women’s marathon world record by nearly two minutes. Chepngetich, 30, crossed the finish line in an astounding 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds, becoming the first woman to win the Chicago race three times.
By the halfway mark, she had pulled ahead of her competitors, running the final stretch to the cheers of the crowd. Ethiopia’s Sutume Kebede finished 7 minutes and 36 seconds later, followed by Kenya’s Irine Cheptai in third with a time of 2:17:51.
“This is my dream that has come true,” Chepngetich shared, marking her triumph in the race. She broke the previous world record of 2:11:53, set by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa just last year in Berlin.
