On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu awarded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) during a Nigeria/India Bilateral meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This prestigious honor underscores Nigeria’s commitment to its growing partnership with India.
President Tinubu explained that the award symbolized Nigeria’s deep appreciation for India and its leader, acknowledging Modi’s historic achievement of winning three consecutive elections in a complex society. He also highlighted that the high-level meeting aimed to strengthen and redefine the existing ties between the two countries for mutual benefit.
In response, Prime Minister Modi expressed condolences for the recent floods in Nigeria, particularly in Maiduguri, Borno, and pledged to send 20 tonnes of relief materials to support Nigeria’s ongoing humanitarian efforts. Modi also emphasized the productive discussions with President Tinubu, focusing on accelerating their strategic partnership.
