A committee to address the national secretary crisis is established by the PDP BoT

To resolve the ongoing dispute over the National Secretary position, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has announced the formation of a mediation committee. This strategic move aims to address the internal discord that has plagued the party, particularly since the contentious exit of Senator Samuel Anyanwu to contest the Imo State governorship election.

The committee, headed by former Minister Tanimu Turaki, is tasked with interfacing with all parties involved in the dispute. This announcement was made following a series of chaotic events at the party’s national secretariat, where physical altercations between supporters of the two claimants, Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, disrupted a BoT meeting. The crisis escalated after a Court of Appeal ruling on December 20, 2024, removed Anyanwu from his position and affirmed Ude-Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary. However, Anyanwu’s subsequent legal actions, including filing for a stay of execution and appeal, have kept the issue in legal limbo.

Adolphus Wabara, the Chairman of the BoT, emphasized the urgency of resolving this matter to maintain party unity and address the broader challenges facing the PDP. “The BoT is committed to ensuring a peaceful resolution,” Wabara stated, adding that Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum had assured the BoT that a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting would be convened in February to further address the crisis.

The formation of this committee comes at a critical time when the PDP is looking to strengthen its position as a viable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The internal strife within the PDP has been a point of concern for party members and observers.

The mediation committee’s role will be to engage with the conflicting parties, study the situation comprehensively, and report back to the BoT for further action. This initiative is seen as a step towards reconciliation not only for the national secretary position but also for overall party cohesion, crucial as the PDP navigates through Nigeria’s political landscape amidst economic and security issues.

Critics and supporters alike are watching closely to see if this committee can bring about a resolution that not only settles the current dispute but also fortifies the party’s internal mechanisms for future leadership challenges. The outcome of this mediation could have significant implications for the PDP’s strategy in upcoming electoral battles and its ability to present a united front against the APC.

As the PDP moves forward, all eyes will be on this committee’s ability to navigate the complex legal and political terrain to restore order within the party ranks.
