A World Cup of upsets: Cameroon becomes first African team to defeat Brazil in a World Cup match

The last round of the group-stage matches was held yesterday and what a way to wrap up the preliminary stanza of the Qatar 2022 football mundia which has served the world with dramatic games that came twists and turns.

Cameroon, who had never won any of their last nine world cup matches came up against The Samba Boys of Brazil who had already booked their place in the round of 16, at the Lusail stadium on Friday. Brazil fielded their second team with the likes of, Dani Alves who makes history as the oldest player to play at the FIFA World Cup, Telles, Fabinho, Fred, Rodrigo, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazillian boys dominated the game with the pride of becoming the only team at the tournament to win their group with a maximum of nine points, but Cameroonian captain, Aboubakar had other plans, as his “die minute” header gave The Indomitable Lions an unexpected victory. Prior to this game, Brazil had never lost a group-stage match in the last 24 years.

Aboubakar was however not enough to see Cameroon through the next stage as they finished the group with four points, behind Switzerland who finished second with six points behind Brazil the group leaders with six points, but with more goal aggregates.
