The Oyo Mesi (kingmakers) of the Agunloye Ruling House has been tasked with selecting the next Alaafin of Oyo from among the princes of the 28 ruling families.
On Friday, it is rumored that a total of twenty princes from 28 families applied and expressed an interest in the position (today).
Oyo’s Abdukareem, Ishaq, head of Mogaji Isale Oja, told our correspondent that Agunloye gave birth to 29 children, only one of whom, Lawani Agogo Ija, has produced Alaafin three times.
This time, he said, a member of one of the 28 families of Agunloye would be the one to bear Alaafin’s successor.
According to him, 20 princes had expressed an interest in becoming the next ruler of the country, while calling for fairness from the kingmakers so that the remaining 28 royal families would not be pushed out of the running for the position.
“It is our turn to produce the next Alaafin and we are calling on the Oyo Mesi to be fair in this case,” he declared. We are disturbed by those on the other side saying it is their turn again.
Agunloye was the son of Alaafin Adelu Abiodun Atiba, the founder of the current Oyo, who was Alaafin Abiodun Atiba’s first son.” There were 29 children born to Agunloye, and only Alaafin Ajuwo Lawani Agogo Ija’s family has been producing Alaafin since then.
“Other families include Tela Baba Ilaka, Agboyin Alayo Ayo, Ajuwon Loja, Tela Irinborogidi, Olannibaba Mosalasi, Akee Abanikanda, Afonja (Aburo Abanikanda), and Tela Arowona, which totals another 28 members in total.
Tela Aseseruogun, Agboyin Arowona, Ajuwo Sanni, and Adeoye Ileolokuta are a few of the other names that come to mind.
Additionally, Tela Adeoti Olusami Lajire, Oyelegnin Ilaka, Tela Isheke, Tela Olookun (Aremoye Agunloye), Tela Lagbaja (Ile Tetu), Adetunji Ile Awolu, Akadiri Baba Omo Adegboolu, and Adeniran Baba Salami Ilaka are among the other members of the group.”
“There are twenty of our children who have applied to work for me. Alaafin’s descendants come from the same 28 families that have produced him in the past. Tomorrow (Friday) is the deadline for applying,” I believe there are still a few interested people.”
He said that the families had princes who had excelled in various fields and had a deep understanding of tradition and culture and the carriage to succeed Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
This appeal is being made, but if it is not successful, we are prepared to take the matter to court. In the Agunloye Ruling House, all three of the Alaafin were from the same family. The next Alaafin should come from one of us, then.
“Our goal is to further develop Oyo Town, and we want businesses to locate here so that everyone can benefit. Justice and equity should be a priority for the state government, he continued.
After Oba Adeyemi’s death on April 22nd, this stool has been left vacant.
As Oba Adeyemi was produced by the Alowolodu ruling house, the Agunloye ruling house will produce the next Alaafin by the laws in force at the time.
