Amnesty International Urges Nigerian Government to Address Plateau Killings and Ensure Justice

Amnesty International has called on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action in ending the ongoing killings in Plateau State and deliver justice to the victims and their families.

The human rights organization expressed deep concern over the continuous wave of violence in the state, where numerous attacks by armed groups have left hundreds dead, communities displaced, and properties destroyed. In its recent statement, Amnesty International emphasized the urgent need for the Nigerian government to protect lives and uphold justice.

“The persistent failure of authorities to prevent these attacks or hold perpetrators accountable has emboldened armed groups to continue carrying out deadly assaults with impunity,” the statement read.

Amnesty also highlighted the trauma endured by survivors and internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of whom are still struggling with the loss of loved ones, destruction of homes, and lack of basic support from the state. The organization urged security agencies to step up intelligence-gathering and rapid response strategies to prevent further bloodshed, while also calling for transparent investigations into past attacks.

Plateau State, long plagued by ethno-religious and communal tensions, has seen an escalation in violence in recent months, with attacks often targeting vulnerable rural communities.

Amnesty International reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation and advocating for accountability. The organization stressed that justice must not be delayed, as doing so would only deepen the cycle of violence and undermine the rule of law.
