As the tech world eagerly awaits the fall release of Apple’s next-generation devices, exciting reports emerge about the high-end iPhone 15 models, signaling some significant changes on the horizon.
According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Apple is set to bid farewell to its proprietary Lightning charger, which has been the standard for iPhones since 2012. Instead, the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will embrace USB-C charging, aligning with the trend used by most modern gadgets, from Android phones to Apple’s own iPads and some Kindle eReaders from Amazon. The move promises greater convenience for users, as they’ll now be able to carry a single charger that can power all their devices.
That’s not the only transformation in store for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. Bloomberg’s report suggests that these high-end versions will feature titanium edges, a departure from the stainless steel seen in previous iterations. This alteration is expected to not only impart a sleeker design but potentially also reduce the phones’ weight, providing users with a more lightweight and comfortable experience.
However, these changes come in tandem with a wider regulatory context. EU member states have given final approval to a common charger law, slated to be effective by 2024. This law mandates that electronic devices, including mobile phones and tablets, must support USB-C charging. Consequently, Apple’s Lightning charger will no longer suffice in some markets, prompting the tech giant to adapt accordingly.
Addressing the upcoming regulatory requirement, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, acknowledged at The Wall Street Journal Tech Live conference in October that the company will comply with the new standards.
As if the hardware revamp wasn’t enough, there are indications that Apple may also consider raising the price of its high-end iPhone Pros. Since 2019, the company has offered the iPhone Pro starting at $999 in the U.S., while the larger-screened Max model begins at $1,099. The potential price increase could signal Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation while ensuring their premium devices remain highly sought-after in the market.
CNBC reached out to Apple for comment, but as of now, the tech giant has not immediately responded to queries, leaving eager consumers in suspense about what’s in store for the forthcoming iPhone 15 series.
