Argentina is reportedly considering featuring an image of soccer star Lionel Messi on its new 10 peso banknote to celebrate the country’s World Cup victory.
According to El Financiero newspaper, officials at Argentina’s Central Bank are considering this option due to the note’s denomination beginning with a “10,” which corresponds to the shirt number worn by Messi.
The back of the proposed banknote may also feature the inscription “La Scaloneta,” a nickname for Argentine national team coach Lionel Scaloni, in honor of his achievements, including winning the 2021 Copa America, the Finalissima against Italy, and the World Cup in Qatar.
This would not be the first time Argentina has issued commercial coins to commemorate a World Cup victory, as it did so in 1978 for its first such triumph.
Messi, who scored twice in the memorable World Cup final and was named player of the tournament, is currently celebrating the long-awaited triumph, which had previously eluded him throughout his storied career.
He was narrowly beaten out for the Golden Boot award by his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick in the final.
