Awoniyi shorlisted for August Premier League Player of the Month

Taiwo Awoniyi has been included on the shortlist for the August 2023 Premier League Player of the Month award.

The Nottingham Forest striker extended his outstanding performance from last season, scoring three times in four games for Forest.

According to a statement released by the premier league on Thursday, “The Nigerian striker scored in each of Nottingham Forest’s first three matches, extending his overall scoring streak dating back to last season to seven consecutive Premier League matches, only the third African player to do so.”

Also vying for the award are Jarod Bowen of West Ham, James Maddison of Tottenham Hotspur, Rodri of Manchester City, Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford, and Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton and Hove Albion.

However, fans have until 12pm of Monday, September 11 to cast their votes on the EA Sports website.

In addition to fans’ votes, a selected panel of football expert will choose the champion, who will be announced the following week.

“The fans’ votes will be combined with those of a panel of football experts to decide the winner, who will be revealed next week,” the EPL revealed.

Notably, this weekend’s AFCON qualifier between Nigeria and So Tomé and Principe will have Awoniyi as a member of the team.

In another news, Mikel Arteta of Arsenal has been recognised as Manager of the Month after guiding the Gunners to a winning streak during the time period under consideration.

As they maintained their quest to earn their first league tie since 2004, Arsenal won three games and drew one.

Arteta shared the nomination list for the trophy with Pep Guardiola, his previous manager at Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, David Moyes at Everton, and Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.
