Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State is currently in the United Kingdom for a four-day retreat hosted by UK-based charity organization Inter Mediate at the University of Oxford. The primary focus of the retreat is to bolster Borno State’s peace-building initiatives and attract increased international support, with particular attention given to assisting victims of insurgency and rehabilitating repentant insurgents.
The retreat, which is set to conclude on Saturday, January 16, 2023, is aptly themed “Strengthening the Borno Model.” This theme underscores the endeavor to refine the strategies employed in promoting peace and encouraging the mass defection of Boko Haram fighters, while also addressing any shortcomings within the existing model.
Governor Zulum, during his participation on Thursday, delivered a presentation titled “The Borno Model – A Strategic Vision for the Next Phase (Results, Ambition, and Challenges).” This presentation likely outlined the achievements, future aspirations, and hurdles that the Borno Model faces in its mission to bring lasting peace to the region.
Inter Mediate, the hosting charity organization, has a well-established reputation for its efforts to end armed conflicts worldwide. In this instance, they have teamed up with international experts to develop implementation plans centered around transitional justice and strategic communications. Additionally, the retreat aims to articulate a vision for the future trajectory of the Borno Model within the broader context of Nigeria’s overarching peace strategy.
Governor Zulum arrived in the United Kingdom on Wednesday evening, where he was warmly received and hosted to a dinner at the University of Oxford’s first college. This retreat represents a significant step in consolidating efforts to bring about peace and stability in Borno State and demonstrates the commitment of both the state government and international partners to this crucial endeavor.
