Celebrating a Decade of Empowerment: Duchess International Magazine

Duchess International Magazine, a space for African women’s narratives and empowerment, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The magazine, which has become a platform for showcasing the brilliance and diversity of African women, was founded by Abolaji Odunuga, a visionary in leadership, media, and advocacy.

In an exclusive interview, Odunuga, who also founded the Duchess International Women’s Day Conference (#DIWDC), shared insights into her journey and the magazine’s impact. “My vision for the magazine was to create a space where African women could share their stories, celebrate their achievements, and inspire one another,” she stated, reflecting on her multifaceted career that spans technology, media, and community service.

Odunuga’s background in technology, leadership, and advocacy has significantly shaped the magazine and the conference. “Technology taught me precision and problem-solving, which translated into creating a strategic and empathetic platform,” she explained. Her experience in leadership and community building underscored the importance of collaboration and inclusivity, principles that are central to both her magazine and the conference.

The #DIWDC was born from Odunuga’s realization of the need for a more inclusive approach to women’s empowerment, incorporating men and addressing challenges for both boys and girls. “The conference isn’t just an event; it’s a movement that connects leaders with aspiring changemakers,” she emphasized.

The journey of #DIWDC from its inaugural event in Kigali to Nairobi and now Dakar illustrates its growing influence. “Each location has taught us the importance of adaptability and listening to our participants,” Odunuga noted, highlighting the evolution of the conference into a significant platform for policy advocacy, networking, and practical empowerment.

With the 2025 theme “Accelerate Action: A Call to Ignite, Empower, and Engage African Women for Transformative Realities,” Odunuga outlined key areas where African women should focus: leadership in policy, economic empowerment, education, community networking, and health. “We need African women to take more seats at decision-making tables and to use these positions to shape a better future,” she urged.

As she reflects on her personal achievements, Odunuga values most those that break barriers and foster community, like her presidency at the Rotary Club of Crawley and founding the African Community in Surrey and Sussex (ACISS). “The real achievement is in the lives touched and the doors opened for others,” she said.

Looking ahead, Odunuga envisions Duchess International Magazine and #DIWDC expanding their reach and impact, becoming pivotal in shaping narratives and policies for African women globally. “In ten years, we’ll be not just reflecting on our journey but setting new milestones for empowerment and unity,” she concluded.

This anniversary not only marks a decade of success but also sets the stage for future initiatives that continue to empower, connect, and celebrate African women across the globe.
