China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in the entertainment sector. This agreement was solidified during the 5th National Entertainment Peace Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria, marking World Peace Day 2024. The summit focused on the theme “Cultivating A Culture of Peace” and highlighted how entertainment can serve as a bridge for fostering global harmony and cultural understanding.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Yang Jianxing, Director of the China Cultural Center and Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, emphasized the significance of entertainment in promoting unity across diverse populations. He noted that entertainment not only provides relaxation but also alleviates negative emotions, helping people overcome personal and societal challenges. “Entertainment can help alleviate negative emotions by providing relaxation and a means to forget temporary sadness,” he stated. Mr. Jianxing also underlined that entertainment has the potential to be a vital cultural exchange hub between China and Nigeria, ultimately contributing to economic development and global peace.
This year’s summit attracted stakeholders from various sectors, all of whom shared a common goal of advancing peace through entertainment. Mr. Jianxing called for stronger partnerships between the entertainment industries of both nations, emphasizing that China places great importance on people-to-people communication as a foundation for global peace. “The cooperation between the entertainment sectors of the two countries will be very important in the future,” he added, underscoring the role of cultural exchange in fostering long-term international friendships.

Mr. Nsikan Paul, Executive Director of Drum Majors for Peace, echoed similar sentiments, explaining that the summit aims to use entertainment as a vehicle to promote sustainable peace. He stressed that through art, music, and film, Nigeria and China can build platforms that not only entertain but also inspire harmony and understanding among different communities. The use of entertainment as a peacebuilding tool was a recurring theme throughout the summit, with speakers emphasizing its potential to shape public perceptions and mitigate conflict.
Another key speaker, Dr. Ayodeji Mafikuyomi, Group Managing Director of Unicorn Holdings Limited, spoke on how entertainment events create valuable opportunities for cultural exchange. According to Dr. Mafikuyomi, the entertainment industry can be harnessed to foster collaborations that extend beyond business and into areas of social impact, particularly in promoting peace and unity. “Entertainment brings people together,” he noted, “and platforms like this summit help us use it to bridge cultural divides.”
The 5th National Entertainment Peace Summit also featured several cultural displays, live music performances, and award presentations, which brought the theme of peace to life. Attendees witnessed firsthand how cultural performances can reflect the shared values of unity and friendship that both Nigeria and China hope to promote globally. These displays served as powerful reminders of the role that cultural exchange plays in breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of shared humanity.
Organized by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria and Drum Majors for Peace, the summit concluded with renewed enthusiasm for future collaborations. As China and Nigeria continue to strengthen ties in the entertainment sector, both countries are sending a clear message: cultural diplomacy and entertainment are crucial tools in the quest for global peace.
