Trade relations between China and Nigeria reached $22.5 billion in 2023, according to Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai. Speaking during an event marking the 75th anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, Dunhai emphasized the success of the countries’ practical cooperation in key sectors like infrastructure, trade, and agriculture.
“In 2023, bilateral trade between our two countries reached $22.5 billion. Our practical cooperation has achieved fruitful results… bringing tangible benefits to both Chinese and Nigerian people,” Dunhai said.
Dunhai also highlighted that Nigeria remains China’s largest project contracting market in Africa, noting its significant role as a trading partner and investment destination. He added that the relationship, established in 1971, continues to grow through high-level engagements and deepened political trust.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, affirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to providing legislative support for the implementation of the recently signed 13 agreements between the two nations.
“The National Assembly would deploy the necessary legislative framework to support the implementation of these agreements,” Abbas said, adding that the House would actively engage its Chinese counterpart to explore further opportunities.
Abbas noted that Nigeria could learn from China’s legislative strategies to address national challenges and drive development. He emphasized, “It is imperative that we work hand-in-hand to address common challenges while seizing opportunities for growth that benefit both nations.”
In addition, President Bola Tinubu recently appointed Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.
