Since the sector was privatized almost nine years ago, the ability of the 11 energy distribution firms, also known as the DisCos, to absorb more power produced by generating businesses, GenCos, has only increased by 18%.
The Association of Power Generating Companies, the joint body of GenCos, provided statistics that were broken down. In 2013, the DisCos could only use 3, 183 of the 4, 214 megawatts that the GenCos produced, leaving a deficit of 1,030 MW.
The GenCos claimed that from January to July 2022, they had been able to create 5, 516MW per day, while the DisCos had only been able to absorb 3, 802MW per day.
Executive Secretary of APGC, Joy Ogaji, said that DisCos owed them N2 trillion in debt ever since privatization during a recent conference in Lagos titled “Power Sector Dilemma: Issues, Challenges, Opportunities And Strategic Key Solutions.”
The DisCos have frequently attributed their inability to fully absorb the power supplied by the GenCos to their inability to recover tariffs, which had caused shortages in the industry.
