In a recent announcement, billionaire technology entrepreneur Elon Musk said his Starlink satellite Internet service would soon be available in Nigeria.
According to Musk’s Twitter account, Starlink has been granted operating permits in Nigeria and Mozambique.
Nigeria and Mozambique have both given their blessings to Starlink, the CEO wrote.
Nigerian Communications Commission confirmed this in a statement, saying that the service had indeed been granted two licenses to begin operations in Nigeria.
According to the NCC, the company has received “the International Gateway license and the Internet Service Provider license and will trade as Starlink Internet Services Nigeria Ltd.
The International Gateway and ISP licenses, according to the commission, have a 10-year and 5-year tenure, respectively. From May 2022, both licenses are valid and can be renewed.
After promising a Twitter follower that the satellite service would soon be available in Africa, Musk made his announcement today.
On Tuesday, he tweeted, “Starlink will serve everywhere on Earth that we are legally allowed to serve.
Launched by the space exploration company SpaceX, the high-speed, low-latency Starlink broadband service is available around the world. There are a variety of other high-bandwidth activities made possible by this.
A significant part of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been played by Starlink, as the billionaire sent tens of thousands of satellite stations there in March.
