The Paradigm Initiative (PIN), in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Justice, recently spearheaded a crucial capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening the skills of key law enforcement agencies, empowering them to navigate the complexities of internet governance and digital rights.

Held under the framework of the “Stemming the Tide of Abuse in Nigeria’s Digital Space” (STANDS) initiative and backed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the workshop was designed for officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). The focus was clear: to equip these officers with critical knowledge in policy-making, enforcement, and the adjudication of digital rights cases.

As the world rapidly embraces digital transformation, Nigerian law enforcement faces evolving challenges that are often entangled in online abuse, cybercrime, and violations of digital rights. The workshop was an essential step in ensuring that these officers are not just informed, but also prepared to protect citizens in the digital space with integrity and respect.

Paradigm Initiative, a leading advocate for digital inclusion and digital rights in Africa, emphasized the importance of this training. “Our goal is to equip law enforcement with the knowledge and skills needed to protect human rights in this digital age, ensuring they can serve and protect all communities in Nigeria with integrity and respect,” stated the organization.

The event highlighted the need for digital literacy and a rights-based approach in law enforcement. With Nigeria’s burgeoning digital space increasingly intertwined with issues of human rights, economic activities, and governance, the importance of informed law enforcement cannot be overstated. As officers return to their respective agencies, the hope is that they will champion these learnings, fostering a safer and more just digital ecosystem.
