Bolaji Eniola, Nigeria’s current para badminton champion, clinched three gold medals at the recently concluded inaugural Egypt TV Para Badminton International tournament held in Cairo.
Eniola won gold medals in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. She beat Adriane Spinetti Avila of Brazil 2-0 (21-5, 21-6) to emerge Champion of the Women’s Singles, SL3.
Eniola Bolaji and Chigozie Jeremiah secured a decisive victory by defeating the Indian duo of Jagadesh Dilli and the Italian player Rosa Efomo De Marco with a score of 2-0 (21-7, 21-10) in the Mixed Doubles SL3 event.
In the Women’s Doubles Finals of the SL3-SU5 category, Nigeria’s dynamic pair, Bolaji Mariam Eniola and Chinyere Okoro, clinched the gold medal after a thrilling match against Rosa Efomo De Marco from Italy and Diana Lizeth Leon from Colombia. The Nigerian duo triumphed with a close scoreline of 21-19, 16-21, and 21-13.
Recall that last week, the World Record Holder for the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, also broke an African record of 25 years by finishing at 7.77s at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan.
Expressing his enthusiasm, the president of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, commended the young athletes for their unwavering dedication, resilience, and determination, which paved the way for this remarkable achievement.
The upcoming World Championships in Thailand will serve as the last opportunity for athletes to accumulate world ranking points, crucial for qualifying for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The qualification process concludes on March 31, with the Badminton World Federation’s Race to Paris rankings finalizing the allocation of 120 slots across 16 medal events for the prestigious sporting event.
