Enugu State has officially secured the hosting rights for the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, marking the first time any state in Southeast Nigeria will host the prestigious event since its inception in 1973. The announcement followed a competitive bidding process involving several states across the federation.
This milestone was disclosed during a weekend briefing at the Government House by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, and the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Hon. Chris Ozongwu. The briefing followed a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Peter Mbah.
Governor Mbah’s leadership and significant investments in sports infrastructure were cited as key factors in securing the hosting rights. Barr. Ekweremadu emphasized the state’s commitment to delivering a world-class festival that promotes excellence, inclusivity, and talent discovery. “The strides recorded under Governor Mbah’s leadership were instrumental in winning the bid. The government is focused on upgrading key infrastructure, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Awgu Games Village, to ensure a top-tier event,” he stated.
The festival is expected to draw over 15,000 athletes, providing a platform to showcase emerging talents and foster sports development. This event aligns with the governor’s broader vision to position Enugu as a hub for sporting excellence and international recognition.
