Jaan Roose, a 31-year-old Estonian and world-renowned slacklining champion, brought the bustling streets of Lagos to a standstill with a breathtaking performance. Roose showcased his awe-inspiring talents on a suspended 66m rope, traversing a distance of 350 meters between Sterling Towers and the Onome rig in Marina.
Slacklining, known for its balance training, recreational, and meditative aspects, took a thrilling turn as Roose, a three-time world champion and holder of multiple world records, walked the fine line suspended high above the ground. His daring act drew the attention of commuters and residents in the Central Business District (CBD) of Marina, creating a captivated audience eager to witness his unmatched prowess.
The event, a collaboration aimed at capturing the “perfect Lagos selfie” and bringing delight to the city’s residents, also featured Roose’s partner, Oskar Jussi, and crew members who were making their first visit to Nigeria. The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyitolu, commended Roose’s audacious display, emphasizing the unique and interesting nature of slacklining.
Reflecting on their experience in Nigeria, Jussi expressed amazement and shed light on the challenges faced during the setup of the slackline, particularly navigating the bustling traffic in Marina. The Red Bull-sponsored project aimed to push the boundaries of slacklining, especially in Nigeria where the sport is relatively unfamiliar.
Despite logistical challenges, including navigating traffic and ensuring minimal disruption to office-goers, the team expressed gratitude for the warm reception they received in Nigeria. The evening concluded with the final leg of the slacklining performance, marking the end of an extraordinary display of skill and a unique cultural exchange.
