Jorg Schmadtke, a former Wolfsburg sporting director, has said that he regrets selling Victor Osimhen too soon while he was a member of the team.
Osimhen joined the Bundesliga club after helping Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets team win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015 with 10 goals.
After spending 16 games without scoring for Wolfsburg, the striker was granted permission to sign a loan with Sporting Charleroi of the Belgian Pro League.
He began his transformation into a merciless striker at Sporting Charleroi, scoring 20 goals across all competitions in the 2018–19 season.
After the transfer was deemed permanent, Osimhen moved a few weeks later to Ligue 1 team, Lille.
Before joining Serie A club Napoli, the 24-year-old played just one season at Lille.
The Nigerian international is currently considered to be one of the top forwards in the world.
The player’s sale was regretted, according to Schmadtke, who is about to become Liverpool’s sporting director.
He said to Kicker: “It wasn’t a good move, in hindsight. When I came, he [Osimhen] was limping and running in circles.
“I was told that the strikers we had weren’t good enough. The most important lesson is that you have to be patient with some transfers.”
