Microblogging sites Facebook and Instagram experienced a global outage on Tuesday, affecting thousands of users worldwide.
The outage was first reported around 3:00 PM GMT, with more than 500,000 reports of outages for Facebook and dozens of reports for Instagram, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, acknowledged the issue, with spokesperson Andy Stone stating in a post on X, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”
Meta’s status dashboard also indicated that the application programming interface for WhatsApp Business was experiencing glitches, with around 200 reports of outages for WhatsApp.
The outage quickly became one of the top trending topics on X, formerly known as Twitter, with several users reporting being suddenly logged out of Meta-owned social media platforms.
This incident highlights the widespread reliance on these platforms for communication and the need for robust infrastructure to prevent such outages in the future.
