The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a 50% electricity subsidy for all public hospitals and public tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. This significant policy decision was announced by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the commissioning of several completed projects at the National Ear Care Centre in Kaduna on Thursday.

Dr. Alausa revealed that the subsidy, which was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will soon lead to substantial reductions in energy costs for these critical public institutions. “The process of implementation is being developed by the Honourable Minister of Energy. Very soon, hospitals and public education systems will be enjoying significant reductions in the prices they are currently paying for their energy tariff,” Dr. Alausa stated.

The minister highlighted that this development aligns with President Tinubu’s broader agenda to provide affordable and comprehensive healthcare to Nigerians. Among the newly commissioned facilities at the National Ear Care Centre are an auditorium, student hostel, oxygen plant, and a molecular laboratory. These enhancements are seen as crucial steps toward improving healthcare service delivery and medical training in the country.

Addressing ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector, particularly the “Japa” syndrome, Dr. Alausa announced efforts to increase training quotas and improve remuneration for healthcare workers to retain more professionals within the country. He also outlined plans for a national electronic medical system to revolutionize patient care and data management in Nigeria.

Dr. Alausa emphasized the government’s commitment to revamping the health sector, noting that the 2024 budget includes the highest allocation to health in the nation’s history. He also praised healthcare professionals for their dedication and urged citizens to support the President’s efforts to fulfill his promises and drive the country toward a positive trajectory.
