More than 800 athletes and 200 officials will compete in the third edition of the Gov. Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics, scheduled for November 3 to 10, 2024, in Yenagoa. Organized by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) in collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government, the event is aimed at motivating Nigerian wrestlers after the 2024 Paris Olympics.
NWF President Daniel Igali, speaking at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, revealed that this year’s theme is “Preparing Champions for The Future.” He praised Bayelsa’s wrestling dominance, with the state producing 82 African gold medalists and four Commonwealth champions. The event has attracted interest from over 25 states, military and para-military organizations, and 15 wrestling clubs across Nigeria.
Igali also noted that top officials, including the Comptroller General of Customs and the Chief of Defence Staff, have confirmed their attendance, with more dignitaries expected to follow.
