Guinea-Bissau head coach Baciro Cande expressed confidence in Nigeria’s Super Eagles to clinch the title at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite his team’s 1-0 defeat to Nigeria on Monday.
Cande’s optimism comes on the back of a closely contested encounter that saw Opa Sangante’s unfortunate own goal handing Nigeria a victory, ending Guinea-Bissau’s AFCON 2023 journey on a disappointing note.
Speaking to the media post-match, Cande acknowledged Nigeria’s quality and highlighted star player Victor Osimhen as Africa’s best. He stated, “Nigeria has a good team, a lot of quality players, including Victor Osimhen, who is Africa’s best player. It is a team I know very well, and I believe they will go far in this competition. I believe they can win it. They are now among the favorites.”
While the Super Eagles have faced skepticism for their performances in the tournament so far, Cande’s endorsement adds to the growing sentiment that Nigeria, with its talented squad, could be a formidable force as the AFCON 2023 progresses.
The Super Eagles, seeking their fourth AFCON title, have yet to fully convince critics of their championship credentials. However, Cande’s nod to their potential adds an interesting twist to the tournament’s narrative.
