After suffering ankle ligament damage during Friday’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United in their FA Cup third-round match, Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi was out for three weeks and is anticipated to play against Arsenal on February 3.
After being brutally tackled by Tyrell Malacia in the 47th minute, the 26-year-old former Arsenal player suffered ankle ligament damage.
The Nigerian would not be need to sit out for an extended amount of time seeking treatment, it was discovered after a scan on Sunday.
“Alex Iwobi is expected to be out for around three weeks with the ankle ligament injury sustained against Manchester United on Friday,” the club wrote on their website.
“The Everton midfielder was taken off on a stretcher early in the second half of the FA Cup tie at Old Trafford.
“Scan results on Saturday confirmed a lateral ligament injury that will be managed conservatively by the club’s medical team at Finch Farm.”
The accident is yet another setback for Everton, who last week’s lopsided home loss to Brighton saw them slip into the Premier League’s relegation zone.
Iwobi thanked Everton supporters for their support in a post on social media and assured them that he would be back soon.
“Appreciate the love, back soon.” the midfielder wrote.
Iwobi had been one of Everton’s standout players this season up until his injury. He had participated in all 18 of the team’s Premier League games this year, recording one goal and five assists.
Iwobi’s absence will be noticed as Frank Lampard struggles to keep his team out of the relegation zone as the Toffees sit in 18th place on the standings with 15 points from 18 games.
