A key member of the notorious Boko Haram group known as Bochu Abacha has surrendered to troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State. This was confirmed in a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba on Saturday, marking a crucial moment in the military’s intensified operations in the region.

Abacha, who was involved in multiple operations along the Monguno-Baga axis, made the decision to defect as a result of increased pressure from military campaigns and his growing dissatisfaction with the group’s activities. “The continuous military assaults have weakened their morale, and Bochu’s surrender is a testament to this,” said Colonel Osoba. His defection comes at a time when the MNJTF has ramped up efforts to dismantle Boko Haram’s network across the region.

According to the statement, Bochu Abacha escaped from a Boko Haram camp located in Mussaram, still armed with an AK-47 rifle. Upon his surrender, he handed over the weapon along with a magazine containing 11 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, a mobile phone, an AIRTEL SIM card, and N32,500 in cash. These items were recovered and are currently being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Bochu’s decision to surrender highlights the increasing disillusionment among Boko Haram ranks. “Bochu Abacha’s defection offers a ray of hope,” Colonel Osoba noted, adding that the former fighter is currently providing valuable intelligence to authorities. His insights are expected to aid in upcoming military operations aimed at disrupting Boko Haram’s hold on the region.

While Bochu’s surrender signals progress, security experts warn that it is just one piece of the broader puzzle. “One defection won’t bring an end to Boko Haram, but it’s a step in the right direction. Intelligence from defectors like Bochu can be instrumental in preventing future attacks and rescuing captives,” said a senior military official familiar with the operations.

The MNJTF, a coalition of forces from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger, has been intensifying its operations against Boko Haram over the past few months. This effort has led to a series of surrenders and increased military successes, although the threat remains formidable. The local population remains cautiously optimistic that sustained military pressure could further weaken the insurgents.
