The longest-serving female senator in history, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, passed away at 2 a.m. on Friday in her home in Washington, D.C. Her office referred to her legacy in a statement as “undeniable and extraordinary.” π
In her 90 years, Feinstein smashed numerous glass ceilings. After a distinguished political career in San Francisco, she was a stalwart of California politics for many years before being elected to the US Senate for the first time in 1992.
She had a number of health problems this year, which caused her to miss a lot of the Senate. She announced in February that she will not seek reelection.
Through her vision, bravery, and leadership, Dianne Feinstein broke through boundaries, encouraged generations of women to run for government, and enhanced the lives of millions of Americans.
Feinstein’s passing will give California democratic Governor Gavin Newsom the authority to name a lawmaker to complete the remainder of her term, preserving the majority in the house through early January 2025.
