After the Super Falcons lost their fifth straight game, ex-Super Falcons winger Stella Mbachu thinks there is no reason to panic.
Prior to losing friendlies against the USA (twice) and Japan, the previous African champions at the WAFCON in August lost both of their games for third place and the semifinals.
Mbachu has urged restraint as the team continues its World Cup preparations despite harsh comments leveled at Falcons coach Randy Waldrum as a result of his team’s dismal performance.
Mbachu, 44, claimed that Waldrum was utilizing the friendlies to get to know the players and get the team ready for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in a conversation with the media.
“The coach is taking his time to build his team, get to know the players, and bring new players to the team. The ones that played in the friendlies against the United States are not the same set of players that went with the team to Japan. So, the coach is trying to assess the players and bring in the U-20 players to join the team.
“There is no need to worry because the World Cup is still nine months ahead, let the coach take his time to test all the players and know the ones that best fit his plans for the tournament.”
Last Thursday at the Noevir Stadium in Kobe, the Falcons lost a friendly match to Japan 2-0.
The Falcons have now lost five consecutive games since their WAFCON victory over Cameroon in July, and this result came only weeks after a two-match tour of the United States of America in which they fell to the USWNT 4-0 and 2-1.
Australia and New Zealand will host the 2023 World Cup from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
