Motorcycle Ban Affects Trade, 36% Drop in Imports

Several states’ bans on motorcycles and the federal government’s threat to criminalize commercial motorbikes, sometimes known as “Okadas,” have a significant negative impact on traders.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics’ international trade data for the relevant time, motorcycle imports into Nigeria decreased by 35.92% in the second quarter of 2022.

This fall occurs as the Federal Government contemplates outlawing mining and motorcycle use in response to the terrorist attacks on the Kuje Correctional Facility on July 5 and other locations across the country.

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation, disclosed that the terrorists’ use of motorbikes allowed them to move around with money that was obtained from mining and used to buy weapons.

Adebayo Apelogun, national president of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria, protested the proposed restriction on the operations of motorcycle operators in the nation.

Motorcycle use is prohibited in several regions in states like Lagos, Anambra, and Zamfara.
