MTN has been named as Sub-Saharan Africa’s top network by international data and technology companies, Ookla and UmlauT.
An assertion read, “Using insights from its data platform, ‘Speedtest’, which tests Internet connection performance, Ookla, a network firm based in the United States, assessed four network providers, MTN, Airtel, Orange, and Vodacom, which account for 62 per cent of Internet subscriptions in Sub-Saharan Africa, to infer which network providers have the fastest internet speeds and which cities have the fastest internet connections.”
MTN South Africa was cited as having the highest median download speed at 65.95 Mbps, followed by Vodacom South Africa and Safaricom Kenya, which had median download speeds of 48.71 Mbps and 36.25 Mbps, respectively. A median download speed of 26.3 Mbps is reported for MTN Nigeria.
According to the statement, when the download speeds for important African cities were measured, MTN Cape Town and MTN Johannesburg placed second and third, respectively, with speeds of more than 60 Mbps in each city, while Vodacom Johannesburg claimed top place with a speed of more than 81 Mbps.
