Ahmed Musa, the captain of the Super Eagles, gave the Flamingos N3 million as a reward for their bronze-medal performance in the U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
In the third-place final, Nigeria overcame Germany 3-2 on penalties on Sunday in Mumbai after the score at halftime was 3-3.
Celebrating Flamingos’ heroic achievement, Musa tweeted, “Three million waiting for Flamingos in Abuja, congratulations. “
With their triumph on Sunday, Nigeria became the second African team to accomplish the feat. At the 2012 edition of the competition, Ghana won the bronze medal.
Prior to the Germans staging a stunning comeback late on to draw the loser’s final 3-3, the Flamingos had scored first and were up 3-0.
Blessing, Etim, and Player of the Game Ajakaye all converted from the penalty spot for the Flamingos, but Germany’s key penalty kick was missed by Pauliner Bartz, making up for defender Tumininu Adeshina’s error.
