On Saturday, Nigeria and the Republic of South Africa reiterated their urgent call for an immediate ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities in Sudan. This appeal was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, during their meeting on the sidelines of the African Union Executive Council in Accra.

The joint statement, released by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Tuggar, highlighted the ministers’ grave concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This conflict has led to the loss of numerous innocent lives, exacerbated a severe humanitarian crisis, displaced millions, and resulted in significant destruction of critical infrastructure. Women and children have been disproportionately affected by the violence.

The ministers emphasized the urgent need for the international community to take concrete and practical steps to facilitate a peaceful and inclusive resolution to the conflict. They stressed the importance of immediate humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

“The humanitarian situation in Sudan is dire, and it is imperative that we expedite access to aid for those affected,” stated Minister Tuggar. “We call on all parties involved to agree to an immediate ceasefire and to begin the process of peace negotiations.”

Minister Lamola echoed this sentiment, urging the global community to support efforts for a peaceful resolution. “The international community must act swiftly and decisively to bring an end to this conflict and support Sudan in its recovery process,” he said.

In addition to discussing the Sudan crisis, the ministers reviewed broader regional and continental issues concerning peace and security in Africa. They reaffirmed the strong historical bilateral relations and bonds of friendship between South Africa and Nigeria, expressing their commitment to expanding and deepening cooperation across various sectors.

To further solidify this commitment, preparations are underway for the upcoming session of the Bi-National Commission, which is scheduled to take place in South Africa. This session aims to strengthen the collaboration between the two nations and address shared challenges and opportunities.
