The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the dualization of the 1,068-kilometer Sokoto to Lagos superhighway, with the groundbreaking ceremony held in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Thursday. The road project, awarded to Hitech Construction Company Limited, will connect seven states, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, facilitating improved transportation and economic activities across the northern and southern regions of Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu, represented at the event by Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, emphasized the importance of the project. “We, the people of this state, are indebted to the President for his continued support to our people, from the distribution of fertilizers to food palliatives,” said Governor Aliyu.

Governor Aliyu highlighted the president’s affection for Sokoto State, noting the additional ministerial slot allocated to the region. “This project and the President’s actions show his deep love for the people of this state. We are committed to ensuring that the President gets even more votes in the 2027 general elections to continue his good work,” the governor added.

The Sokoto to Lagos road was first proposed during President Shehu Shagari’s administration nearly five decades ago. Senator Umahi noted that the dualized road will feature six lanes to ease traffic congestion. “The superhighway will be designed with solar-powered streetlights, CCTV cameras, and other modern technologies, as seen in other parts of the world. It is only President Bola Tinubu who can make this happen, and we are already on it,” he assured.

The Minister also projected that the first phase of the project would be completed by 2027 and encouraged citizens to support the continuation of the second phase by re-electing the current administration..
