Five countries are competing to replace Guinea as the host of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to CAF President Patrice Motsepe. The countries in the running are Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, Zambia, and Benin-Nigeria.
Guinea, which was chosen as the host in 2014, withdrew from hosting the tournament last year after little progress had been made in preparing for the event.
CAF officials will conduct inspection tours of all the candidates this month, and the winners will be announced on February 10.
Motsepe, a South African billionaire businessman, stated that the successful country or countries will offer the best “transport, logistics, hotels, and beautiful stadiums” for the tournament.
He also added that each region will have a chance to organize a CAN, and that the organization of the tournament cannot be assigned successively to the same region.
It is worth noting that Benin and Nigeria are in West Africa, as are the Ivory Coast, which will host the 2023 Cup of Nations.
