In August, the Ijebu-Ode region of Ogun state saw the seizure of 20 drums of carbide by the Nigeria Customs Service.
Speaking to journalists in Ikeja on Tuesday, the acting Customs Area Controller in charge of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Comptroller, Ejibunnu Hussain, said that the Duty Paid Value of the seized explosives is N33m.
Ejibunnu went on to explain that the substance is utilized to create improvised explosive devices. He further stated that the National Security Adviser’s office must approve the importation of this kind of drug.
“The unit seized 20 drums of Carbide, along Ijebu-Ode in August. The substance used to produce IED. If allowed to get into the hands of unscrupulous persons, it could cause very serious security concerns. And the importation of this has to be approved with an End User Certificate from the office of the National Security Adviser,” he said.
Whoever is coming to lay claim to the package, according to Ejibunnu, must bring an End User Certificate issued from the NSA headquarters.
He added that during the time period under consideration, the team detained 10 people in connection with various seizures. He did, however, reveal that the individuals were under investigation at various times.
He listed other seizures, saying: “1 x 40ft containing flavour seasoning, falsely declared as auto spare parts, 1 x 40ft containing auto interior accessories, falsely declared as filters/pneumatic transmission.”
