For the first time in 20 years, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, has claimed a victory at the Olympics. In a stunning performance at the Paris 2024 Games, Nigeria defeated the highly-ranked Australian Opals 75-62, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s sports history.
The thrilling match took place at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium on Monday, where point guard Ezinne Kalu delivered a clutch performance that inspired the Rena Wakama-coached team to withstand a late rally from the Australians. Kalu’s impressive contribution of 19 points and five rebounds was pivotal in securing Nigeria’s first Olympic win since Athens 2004.
The game began with Australia displaying early dominance, as Jade Melbourne and Ezi Magbegor propelled the Opals to a 13-5 lead. However, the D’Tigress, competing in their second consecutive Summer Games, quickly regrouped. Kalu spearheaded the comeback, scoring 11 points in the first quarter, including three three-pointers, putting Nigeria ahead 18-17.
The second quarter saw Nigeria extend their lead to 41-28 by halftime, thanks to continued excellence from Kalu and strong support from Amy Okonkwo and Elizabeth Balogun. The Nigerian defense capitalized on Australia’s 16 turnovers in the first half, maintaining their advantage with only eight turnovers of their own.
Despite the Opals’ efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, with Alanna Smith leading the charge, Nigeria’s defense held firm. Australia managed to reduce the deficit to four points heading into the final quarter, setting up a tense conclusion.
In the final quarter, the game’s intensity peaked. With just over six minutes remaining, Australia had closed the gap to two points. However, a series of crucial plays shifted the momentum back to Nigeria. Smith missed two free throws, which Promise Amukamara capitalized on by converting her own. Amukamara then assisted Okonkwo for a three-pointer, expanding Nigeria’s lead to seven points.
This advantage allowed the D’Tigress to control the game’s tempo and secure a comfortable victory. This win is not only a historic achievement for Nigeria but also the biggest upset of the Paris 2024 Olympics so far.
Next, the D’Tigress will face host France in their Group B match on Thursday, followed by a game against world number five, Canada, next Monday.
Congratulations to Nigeria D’Tigress on this remarkable #Paris2024 debut!
