The Federal Government has pledged to ensure sustainable and responsible mining activities in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for adherence to both national and global environmental standards. By enforcing stringent regulations and promoting best practices, the government aims to protect the environment for future generations while encouraging investment in Nigeria’s mineral resources. This commitment was reaffirmed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Mary Ogbe, during a sensitization program in Nasarawa State.

Dr. Ogbe, represented by Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of the Mines Environmental Compliance Department, stressed the importance of mining operations complying with environmental obligations. She highlighted that responsible mining goes beyond regulatory compliance, calling it a commitment to environmental stewardship. The government is prepared to work with mining operators to enhance environmental practices, ensuring that mining activities in the country meet the highest standards.

The sensitization program covered key topics such as climate change, environmental responsibilities of mining companies, and community issues. It also addressed the implementation of the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Fund. Stakeholders, including representatives from mining companies and host communities, were encouraged to engage in dialogue to resolve conflicts, ensuring a harmonious relationship between operators and local communities.
