Nigeria Ranks Second in Africa for Best Mental Well-being, According to Global Report

Nigeria has emerged as the second-best country in Africa for mental well-being, according to the Global Mind Project’s fourth annual ‘Mental State of the World’ report. Conducted by Sapien Labs, the report reveals that Tanzania secured the highest ranking, with Nigeria surpassing Zimbabwe.

The report, released in March 2024, highlights a global decrease in mental well-being since the onset of the pandemic. Despite this trend, Nigeria’s ranking reflects positive outcomes in mental health.

Sapien Labs collected data from over 500,000 individuals throughout the year across 71 nations, including 9 geographic regions in Africa. The report used six-layered scores to assess mental well-being, including temperament and standpoint, social self, drive and motivation, adaptability and resilience, cognition, and brain-body connection.

This ranking comes at a challenging time for Nigeria, as the country grapples with economic hardships, including the high cost of living. President Bola Tinubu’s policies, such as the removal of subsidy on petrol and the unification of exchange rate windows, have contributed to these challenges, as highlighted in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.
