Flying Officer David Sangokoya of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been awarded the highly coveted International Sword of Honour for 2023 at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell (RAFCC), United Kingdom. This honor, reserved for the best-performing international cadet at the RAFCC, further cements Nigeria’s growing reputation in military training excellence on the global stage.
The announcement was made in an official statement shared by the Nigerian Air Force on Friday, where it was noted that Sangokoya had attended the Modularised Initial Officers’ Training (MIOT) Course 22 from March to September 2023. Outperforming his peers, he was named the Best International Cadet of the course, earning him the Sword of Honour. The RAFCC, known for its rigorous training, graduates multiple courses each year, but the International Sword of Honour is bestowed on the most exceptional international cadet.
In a proud moment for the nation, the award was presented to Sangokoya by His Royal Highness, William, the Prince of Wales, on behalf of King Charles III during the Royal Graduation ceremony held on September 12, 2024. The presentation of this prestigious accolade underlines the high regard the Royal Air Force holds for its international trainees, and Sangokoya’s achievement marks a significant milestone for both his career and the Nigerian Air Force.
Reacting to the award, Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, praised Sangokoya for his dedication and hard work. “This remarkable achievement is a testament to the officer’s focus, discipline, and the support of his family,” said Air Marshal Abubakar. He further highlighted that Sangokoya’s success brings immense pride to the NAF and Nigeria, positioning the country positively in the international defense community.
The recognition of Flying Officer Sangokoya comes at a time when the Nigerian Air Force continues to invest heavily in the professional development of its personnel, sending officers to prestigious institutions worldwide. His accomplishment adds to a growing list of international accolades for Nigerian military personnel, reflecting the country’s commitment to maintaining a world-class air force.
Sangokoya’s award also highlights the strong ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in military cooperation and training. As the first Nigerian to win this prestigious honor, his success is expected to inspire future cadets and officers to strive for excellence in their careers.
