The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024. The announcement was confirmed in a statement by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC, on Wednesday. The approval followed a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, aligning with the recently enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
Prior to this adjustment, corps members were receiving a monthly stipend of N33,000, which had been set following the 2019 review of the minimum wage to N30,000. The new law has now established N70,000 as the minimum wage, prompting speculations about a potential increase in corps members’ allowances. NYSC management had previously clarified that only the Federal Government could authorize any changes to their stipends.
The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, expressed gratitude to the government for approving the increase. He noted that this move would provide significant relief to corps members and further enhance their morale and commitment to national service.
The statement from the NYSC reiterated the positive impact of the decision, emphasizing that the improved welfare package would encourage corps members to perform their duties with greater dedication.
